BlendingThe art of bringing together fragrances and scents "Blending is the very essence of aromatherapy".
Aromatherapy makes use of blending techniques, in order to break pure and natural essential oils. If applied pure, natural oils can be harmful for our body, but if applied in conjugation with softer carrier oils, they can benefit our health, bringing additional wellbeing to our body.
Therefore, the very foundation of aromatherapy lies within the technique of blending. And by blending different types of essential and carrier oils, aromatherapy creates amazing ever-lasting and unique scents.
Finally, the technique of blending also allows essential oils to enter our bloodstream faster and safer.
Are there any rules concerning blending?
Although there are no rules concerning blending, experts know that some oil combinations are far from optimal, or less beneficial for our health. In this sense, blending not only requires a great deal of expertise, but also of experimenting.
But blending can also be perceived as an intuitive work, of familiarity and knowledge about oils, plants, herbs (their working and properties) and aromas. In conclusion, blending is an art! Choosing your oils Each oil and blend bring us specific thoughts, sensations, emotions and memories. Our intuition, creativity and sensitivity also play an important role in choosing the best oils and creating pleasant, balanced and harmonious blends.
And the best blends often combine different oil notes, diluted in low, normal or high percentages. The oil dosage for blending, also requires some expertise and knowledge. And often, the percentage of essential oils added up to carrier oils, can greatly change the composition, aroma and purpose of a specific blend. Therefore, when choosing essential oils for blending, its also important to take into account among other things: the origin of the oils, colouration, purity level and scent (ex: wooden, fruity, citrus, flowery etc).
Before preparing a blend, one should also take into account other important aspects: - Goal when making a mix e.g. for therapeutic, hygienic, cosmetic or pampering purposes etc;
- Type of skin where the oil is going to be applied;
- Type of essential, carrier oils and their characteristics e.g. properties, scent, colour etc;
- Volatility and evaporation issues (oil notes, best bottles to use, storage issues etc);
- Application method e.g. diffusers, massages, inhalation, compresses etc;
- Tools needed for blending e.g. empty jars, bottles with screw-on cap or drip-cap;
- etc.
