Can essential oils be applied directly in the skin?

Pure essential oils are not supposed to be applied directly and undiluted in the skin.
They are highly concentrated natural remedies, and if not used properly can cause unpleasant skin reactions, allergies and severe blood intoxication.

One of the most common methods prescribed by professional aromatherapists and involving direct skin application, is by adding up a few drops of essential oil to an handkerchief or to a tissue paper.
And although considered a safe method, the use of pure oils along with handkerchiefs should not be attempted by overly sensitive people.

This process of direct inhalation can be used by less sensitive people for long periods of time, until one feels relieved from e.g. sinus symptoms, sore throat, laryngitis, cold or flu.

Finally, essential oils can be used at home, in the office, in the garden etc. and through a wide variety of dispersing equipments.
