Human Karma What is karma?
"Life is an infinite chain of causes and effects."
The word "karma" derivates from the Sanskrit for "action", "to do" or "put setting something in motion". According to Tibetan and Buddhist teachings, life is a chain of motion - of causes and effects. Every single action we undertake, generates future actions, good and bad karmas.
This process very much resembling tossing a stone into a water pool, reveals the wrinkles or "reactions" to our initial action. And every single though, emotion, sensation, action or event, leads people to a new cycle of thoughts, emotions, sensations, actions and events! And this process continues endlessly into the infinite, corresponding to a multitude of lives and existences.
"Do not think a small sin will not return in your future lives. Just as falling drops of water will fill a large container, The little sins that steadfast accumulate will completely overwhelm you.
Do not think a small virtue will not return in your future lives. Just as falling drops of water will fill a large container, The little virtues that steadfast accumulate will completely overwhelm you." -Buddha |
Why is karma created?
Karma is created because human beings are undermined by ignorance, greed, selfishness and cravings. And these human characteristics often lead people to create negative life situations, events, suffering and evilness. Thus, both ignorance and cravings ultimately lead people to wrong deeds and actions, or bad karmas. Good karmas also exist and are very real. They are often originated by higher human values e.g. goodwill, compassion, truth, love, generosity and knowledge. Yet, ignorance and cravings tend to undermine these values, leading most people to bad karmas.
The importance of intention and motivation
All human actions are based in intentions and motivations. And both "intentions and motivations" lead people to take action, initiating or ending cycles of events. As we are both receivers and transmitters of universal energy, all our intentions and motivations are filled with this powerful energy.
In a nutshell, karma can be viewed as an endless "energetic chain of intentions and motivations", based in good or bad values and always leading to an action. And actions ultimately lead to cycles of actions, or to a process called " the wheel of karma or wheel of life". The ultimate goal of this endless process, is to conduct people to attain spiritual development, enlightenment and to dissolve into God's light.
What is the "wheel of karma or wheel of life"?
"Everything that goes around comes around".
This wheel represents human existence in itself, containing a multitude of lives and evolving spiritual experiences. Human inner working, conscious, thoughts and actions lead to the creation of this wheel, which evolves with time, containing all our previous and future existences.
Additionally, human actions can be compared to seeds in the ground. With time seeds germinate and are ready to be harvested. The same happens to human existence, thoughts, emotions and feelings. When they evolve they can be "harvested", bringing rewarding experiences to people, and new stages of self-development and self-awareness.
Are there many different types of karmas?
Yes. Karmas can be viewed both as individual, family-based, social-based, nation-based etc. There are many different types of karmas, as there are many different types of people in the world.
Is karma something negative or fatalist?
No. Although referring to chains of events taking place during a life time, karma should not be perceived as something negative or fatalist. Karma is always based in power of change, free-will and self-responsibility. Thus, negative situations can be changed or turned into positive, and the other way around.
Hence, karma is not painful, unfair or wrong. Its simply a way of leading people to self-redemption, solving in this life time wrong situations they have originated, issues they have omitted or pain they have caused to others. Karma is also an opportunity to dis-obstruct life and generate construction, as opposed to destruction.
Interesting enough, our western notions of faith, sin, pre-destined existence and unchanged life, differ a great deal from eastern notions of karma and reincarnation. These last notions are far more human and not merely fear-based!
